I came across this amazing object a few years ago, and I thought Id give it another bump.
the Corporate Fallout Detector acts like a radiation geiger counter, but instead of sonically representing radiation it sonically reflects the ethics or environmental record of the company behind a barcode. you scan the barcode of a product you might wish to buy and hear varying amounts of clicky noise depending on how nice the company is. an amazing idea, and one that I would desperately love to see implemented into a Java App for mobile phones.
on doing a limited amount of research, it seems that nobody has done it yet, even the maker james patten (from M.I.T.) who has no doubtably thought about it. But reading his site it seems it is more of an awareness art piece and social commentary vehicle – for example, he also criticises the idea that we place our buying awareness and responsibility into the hands of a device, even his. instead he hopes to promote critical awareness and curiosity in our buying.
