Our friend Brenden round the corner from us has decided to turn his studio into a free recording space for interesting live music projects of all sorts… street musicians, singer songwriters, world music groups etc.

uncable website

His idea is alarmingly simple and a very nice twist to the normal music studio model – he records musicians for free, in exchange for them allowing him to distribute the music to a community of web based subscribers that pay a very small monthly fee to support the studio. This way the studio time gets paid for, and subscribers get to support brand new music that might otherwise never be made, and they receive free copies of everything recorded there, and everyone is happy! not only that, the model allows that musicians actually get a cut of the subscription fees so it really takes the standard music production and sales model and throws it out the window…

The music still belongs to the musicians (only original music is recorded) and people get to contribute and support music, and get involved in the process, not just be a passive consumer at the end of the chain. You can see videos of the sessions, and even suggest new projects to record.

There are many musicians are gagging to record their music, but cannot afford the studio time needed to get it done properly. this way they can relax, collaborate, and get on with it…

Very, very neat indeed.
